‘Top Gun: Maverick’ takes down massive Marvel movie to move up the ranks of domestic film
It’s now official: “Top Gun: Maverick” has surpassed “Avengers: Infinity War” as the sixth highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. Thirteen weeks into its run on the big screen, “Top Gun: Maverick” has taken in $683 million in North America, sufficient to move past Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War”. To become 5th, the next target on the list for Top Gun: Maverick is Black Panther with its $700 million in the box office.
On the international front, “Top Gun: Maverick” has generated $720 million. It’s worth noting that the movie was not played in two major foreign markets: China and Russia. On other continents, the highest-grossing territories include the United Kingdom ($98.5 million), Japan ($85.5 million), South Korea ($64.6 million), Australia ($62.2 million) and France ($54.7 million). On a global scale and with $1.403 billion to date, the film is considered as the 12th highest grossing movie ever.
“Top Gun: Maverick” premiered on the big screen in May, breaking a new record for the Memorial Day weekend with $160.5 million. Through 10 weeks, the film maintained a top-five position on the weekend charts, falling to sixth place in its 11th weekend but only shortly. The movie made an exceptional comeback to second place in its 12th release. Jeff Bock, media analyst at Exhibitor Relations, posted on twitter, “This. Fact. Not. Happen.”
While it’s true that a box-office hero like Tom Cruise has been very helpful for “Maverick” fame, the 2022 sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” was by no means a guaranteed hit. As a result of the massive success of the sequel film, Miles Teller has been recently having conversations with the star about the possibility of having a third film in the Top Gun series, said a report on Variety.
One of the records set by the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” is being the first Cruise film to exceed $100 million in a single weekend and his first to hit $1 billion at the global box office. The famous star is being generously rewarded for rejuvenating theaters across the country. Tom Cruise is projected to earn a minimum of $100 million from ticket sales, his salary and his potential part in streaming revenue and home entertainment rentals.
“Top Gun: Maverick,” is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also worked with Cruise in Oblivion. The film features an instructor (Tom Cruise) who trains and then leads fighter pilots on a special mission that is both challenging and dangerous. The cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez, Manny Jacinto, Monica Barbaro, Bashir Salahuddin, Jean Louisa Kelly, Ed Harris, Charles Parnell and Val Kilmer who played the role of Iceman in the first “Top Gun”.
Considering that there will be not much competition until “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is released in November, “Top Gun: Maverick” will be able to keep selling tickets in theaters, according to analytics trends. However, Disney could eventually re-release the 2018 film in preparation for the second part of the movie. But “Maverick” is certainly not unfamiliar with getting through the impossible.
