Train Band Member Dies In Tragic Accident At 58
Charlie Colin, the founding bassist of the renowned rock band Train has died at the age of 58 following a tragic accident. The music world mourns the loss of a talented bassist whose contributions helped shape the sound of one of the most beloved bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
According to reports, Charlie Colin’s life was cut short due to an unfortunate accident while he was house-sitting for a friend in Brussels, Belgium. The musician’s mother revealed that Colin slipped and fell in the shower. Tragically, his body was not discovered until his friends returned from their trip about five days later according to TMZ. The exact timing of the accident remains unclear. Colin’s sister confirmed his passing to Variety as well.
Colin had recently relocated to Brussels, where he was actively involved in the local music scene. He was teaching a music masterclass at a conservatory and working on music for a film.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Colin co-founded Train in the mid-1990s alongside Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford, and Scott Underwood. The band’s early years were characterized by relentless touring and the development of a distinctive sound that would soon capture the hearts of fans worldwide. Train’s self-titled debut album, released in 1998, marked the beginning of their rise to fame. The album featured hits like “Meet Virginia,” which quickly became a fan favorite and received significant radio airplay. The band’s blend of rock, pop, and alternative influences resonated with a broad audience, setting the stage for their subsequent success.

However, it was their second album, “Drops of Jupiter,” released in 2001, that catapulted Train to international stardom. The title track, “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” written by lead vocalist Pat Monahan, was a massive hit, earning the band critical acclaim and commercial success. The song’s introspective lyrics and sweeping melodies struck a chord with listeners, and it remains one of Train’s most iconic songs to this day.
In 2002, Train received two Grammy Awards for their work on “Drops of Jupiter.” They won Best Rock Song for the title track and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s), solidifying their status as a powerhouse in the music industry. Colin’s bass lines and musical contributions were integral to the band’s sound and success during this period.
Despite the band’s achievements, Colin’s journey with Train came to an end in 2003. He parted ways with the group, pursuing other musical endeavors and continuing to influence the industry with his talent. While his departure marked the end of an era for Train, the band’s legacy continued, and Colin’s influence remained evident in their music.
In the wake of his passing, tributes have poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and the music community at large. His mother paid an emotional tribute, describing him as a “beautiful human being” who touched the lives of many with his music and kindness. As fans and loved ones mourn his loss, they also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind – a legacy filled with music, memories, and the enduring spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.
