Trump Border Czar Confirms He Will Reinstate Major Deportation Policy

Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s “border czar,” revealed in an interview that he plans on brining back family detention. The former Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who served under the Obama and first Trump administration, revealed U.S. immigration authorities will “once more put families with children in detention centers.”

“Here’s the issue, you knew you were in the country illegally and chose to have a child. So you put your family in that position,” he told the Wall Street Journal. “We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” Homan said. “How many beds we’re going to need will depend on what the data says.”

“We need to show the American people we can do this and not be inhumane about it,” he continued. “We can’t lose the faith of the American people.”

Homan was a top official at ICE in 2012 when the agency deported over 400,000 individuals, the highest number ever. He mentioned that he couldn’t promise a specific number of deportations until he understands the resources available to increase ICE’s capacity. “I’ll be setting myself up for disappointment,” he said.

Trump and his top advisors have promised to deploy National Guard troops to increase deportations. Homan mentioned that the troops could assist with transportation and other support tasks, but only trained law enforcement officers can carry out immigration arrests.

“I don’t see this thing as being sweeps and the military going through neighborhoods,” he told the WSJ, saying that it will be a “targeted” campaign aimed at those who have criminal records.

Since 2019, around 450,000 unaccompanied minors have been sent to ORR, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security in August. Out of these, 32,000 missed their court hearings, and 291,000 did not receive a notice to appear from ICE. Homan noted that many of these minors are likely with family members, but he aims to engage nonprofit organizations and private contractors to better locate them. He is uncertain about how to secure more funding for a stronger oversight system.

Juárez, Chih., Mex., 03-21-24. Hundreds of migrants attempt to cross the US-Mexico border, while the TX National Guard works to prevent irregular crossings.

“I think some of these children will be in forced labor, and some will be in the sex trade,” he said. “I think some will be perfectly fine. We just want to make sure.”

Homan also mentioned that parents who entered the United States illegally, brought their children over, and took them back from U.S. government care should face deportation. This is why many people choose not to attend government check-ins.

“I’m not saying take them into custody,” the ‘border Czar’ said. “We’ll let them get the child and put them in proceedings with the child, so they can go to court and plead their case as a family.”

He mentioned that he will look into how the government uses the CBP One mobile app, which the Biden administration implemented for managing queues. Homan pointed out that it has led to some fraudulent claims. When asked if illegal crossings might rise if Trump removes the app and other legal entry options, Homan said that strict enforcement, such as not allowing migrants to enter the country while their asylum claims are being processed, will act as a deterrent.

“At the beginning we may see numbers coming up when we shut these programs down,” Homan concluded. “They’re going to try to come illegally, but once the message is clear that we’re ending catch-and-release, the numbers will reduce.”
