President-elect Donald Trump is calling on hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to run for Prime Minister of Canada, stating that he would effectively be running for “governor of Canada” in another jab at embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,’ Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

“He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!”

While Gretzky has stated that he has no interest in the position, Trump’s post did catch the attention of his wife, Janet, who reposted the president-elect’s post on social media.

Trump’s latest post comes as Trudeau is facing calls to step down from key members of his governing coalition. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from Trudeau’s cabinet. Jagmeet Singh — whose New Democratic Party has been crucial to keeping Trudeau’s left-wing government in power —  called on the prime minister to step aside just a few days later.

The main opposition Conservative Party in the country have since called for a new election.

Trump and Trudeau met at the president-elect’s Mar-A-Lago estate last month after Trump threatened to impose steep tariffs on Canadian and Mexican good entering the country if they do not work to curb illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs across their respective borders with the United States.

While the U.S. southern border with Mexico receives the majority of media coverage and political action concerning illegal immigration, record numbers of illegal aliens have been entering the country from Canada since President Biden took office in 2021.

Data gathered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) found that record numbers of illegal aliens entered the United States from the northern border between 2023 and 2024, which reached a monthly peak in May.

Trump has continuously poked fun at Canada’s left-wing prime minister in the days and weeks following the meeting, suggesting that he will soon lead an effort to annex Canada. “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!” the incoming president wrote in a Truth Social post earlier this month.
