Trump Floats Renaming Strait Of Hormuz
President Donald Trump floated another bold geographic name change Wednesday, suggesting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz could become the “Trump Strait” as the United States continues its showdown with Iran.
Trump made the proposal in a Truth Social post while declaring that the United States now controls the crucial Middle Eastern waterway.
“Like America, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” the president wrote.
The suggestion comes as the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major front in the ongoing war with Iran.
Iran has targeted vessels operating in and around the waterway, while U.S. forces have moved to protect commercial shipping and restrict Iranian maritime operations.
The narrow strait connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as one of the world’s most important routes for oil and other energy shipments.
Trump has repeatedly maintained that American forces control the strait, a claim rejected by Tehran as the regime continues facing mounting military and economic pressure from Washington.

The president’s latest proposal also follows a growing pattern of putting an unmistakably American stamp on prominent geographic landmarks.
Last week, Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” as his administration battles Canada over trade.

Google announced Saturday that “Lake America” would begin appearing on Google Maps for users in the United States.
The executive order applies to federal usage and follows Trump’s earlier move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in U.S. government materials.
Donald Trump later proclaimed Feb. 9, 2025, as the first “Gulf of America Day.”
Now the president is turning his attention overseas, where control of the Strait of Hormuz has major implications for global energy markets and America’s campaign to prevent Iran from threatening international shipping.
Whether “Trump Strait” ever becomes an official U.S. designation remains to be seen, but the proposal sends another unmistakable message to Tehran about who Trump believes is calling the shots in the region.
