President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to share the encouraging results of a phone call on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Just completed a two hour call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. I believe it went very well,” Trump wrote.

“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War. The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of,” he added.

The call between Putin and Trump comes amid a series of talks with other world leaders as the president takes on a leading role in attempts to bring wars, on both battlefields and the global trade market, to an end.

In his post, the president commented on the “tone and spirit” of the conversation, describing it as “excellent” and saying that if that wasn’t the case, he would tell everyone in a bid to be more transparent.

“Russia wants to do largescale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic “bloodbath” is over, and I agree,” Trump continued. “There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on Trade, in the process of rebuilding its Country.”

The president also revealed these negotiations are to begin immediately, with the Vatican being a potential venue for the historic meeting. Trump also had a conversation with Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb following the call with Putin.

“Let the process begin!” Trump concluded.

Here’s more from Newsweek:

In Russia, Putin spoke to reporters, telling them he was ready to work with Ukraine on a possible peace agreement while adding that the root causes of the crisis must be addressed, per the BBC. Earlier Monday, Zelensky posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Ukrainian officials had continued talks with Russian counterparts in Turkey last week, with an agreement that a prisoner exchange could take place.

Ukraine continues to push for a 30-day ceasefire and Zelensky said he is willing to engage with direct conversations with Putin and other Russian leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters: “Contacts between participants in the Istanbul talks have resumed, which gives reason to believe that on the whole we’re on the right track.”

Zelenskyy said in a post on X, “The Ukrainian delegation succeeded in keeping the talks in a dignified manner. All Russian attempts to issue threats were rejected. Ukraine insists on the need for a full and unconditional ceasefire in order to save human lives and to establish the necessary foundation for diplomacy. Such a ceasefire must be long enough and include the possibility of extension.”
