Trump Launches Investigation Linked To CNN Over ‘Fake News’ Iran Letter

President Donald Trump is demanding accountability from CNN after the network reported on an Iranian statement tied to a last-minute ceasefire deal, with the president calling the coverage “fake news” and saying authorities are now looking into whether a crime was committed.

CNN reported Tuesday on a ceasefire agreement reached between the U.S. and Iran just hours before Trump was set to launch an attack on Iran’s infrastructure. During its coverage, the network cited Iranian officials who portrayed the negotiations as a “great victory” and framed the deal as something Trump accepted to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for oil traffic.

Mediaite first flagged CNN’s use of the Iranian statement. Trump responded with a blistering post on Truth Social, accusing the network of amplifying a fraudulent claim.

“The alleged Statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows. The false Statement was linked to a Fake News site (from Nigeria) and, of course, immediately picked up by CNN, and blared out as a “legitimate” headline,” the president wrote.

He said Iran later issued what he called an official statement, and he claimed it contradicted the version CNN aired.

“The Official Statement by Iran was just released, and posted on TRUTH, below. Authorities are looking to determine whether or not a crime was committed on the issuance of the Fake CNN World Statement, or was it a sick rogue player? CNN is being ordered to immediately withdraw this Statement with full apologies for their, as usual, terrible “reporting.” Results of the investigation will be announced in the near future,” Trump wrote.

CNN pushed back, saying it stood by its reporting.

“The statement in question was obtained by CNN from Iranian officials and reported on multiple Iranian state media outlets,” a spokesperson for the outlet said. “We received the statement from specific official Iranian spokespeople who are known to us.”

The blowup is the latest clash in a long-running war between Trump and CNN, now sharpened by high-stakes coverage of the Iran conflict and negotiations tied to global energy markets.

FCC chair Brendan Carr also weighed in, slamming the reporting and calling for consequences.

“Fake news is bad enough for the country, but pushing out a hoax headline in such a sensitive national security moment as this requires accountability,” Carr said. “Iran put out an official statement that simply cannot be squared with the one CNN’s false headline attributes to them. Time for change at CNN.”

CNN is owned by Warner Brothers Discovery, which was sold earlier this year to Paramount, a media company owned by Trump allies Larry and David Ellison.
