Trump To Change ‘Gulf Of Mexico’ To ‘Gulf Of America’
President-elect Donald Trump, never one to shy away from bold moves, has proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. In a morning press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort, he called the potential change “beautiful” and “appropriate.”
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory,” Trump said Tuesday, doubling down on the idea with his trademark repetition. “The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Vice President Kamala Harris officially certifying her loss in the contentious 2024 election, cementing Trump’s return to the White House after his 2020 defeat. Trump’s statement marks his second major media appearance since the election, signaling his administration’s plans to redefine not just policy but geography itself.
A naming convention established during the 16th century by Spanish explorers and cartographers, The Gulf of Mexico was part of Spain’s New Spain territories (modern-day Mexico), and the name reflected the area’s geopolitical ties. The Gulf became central to colonial trade and settlement, with its name cemented in maps and historical records. Spanning approximately 600,000 square miles, the Gulf borders Mexico, the United States, and Cuba, serving as a vital hub for fishing, trade, and energy production.
WATCH:
While the renaming proposal is far from official, it underscores Trump’s approach to rebranding and reshaping national identity. His administration is no stranger to unconventional measures, from trade policies to border wall construction.
