Thom Christopher, the antihero heartthrob best known for his work on the soap opera “One Life to Live,” has died at 84.

The actor’s passing was reported by the New York Post and confirmed by his friend Steven Bergman, who wrote on Facebook that Christopher had been “sick for quite awhile now” but “fought through it all like a champ.” Bergman did not elaborate on a cause of death. “We spoke 2-3 times a month and always had great long conversations,” Bergman wrote. “He was such a smart man who gave great advice and told such fantastic stories.”

While visiting with Christopher in New York on Monday, Bergman said his friend “was not fully coherent as he was on a lot of medication.” “When I said my goodbye to him I looked him right in the eyes, told him he was a wonderful man who lived an incredible life,” Bergman continued. He praised Christopher as a “great actor who entertained and gave joy to so many people for so many years” and “a great friend to everyone who had the privilege of being his friend.”

“He comprehended every word I said and replied, ‘Thank you,’” Bergman went on. “I gave him a kiss on the forehead and said goodbye. You were a great man Thom, enjoy the eternal peace that you so richly deserve.”

From 1991 until 2008, Christopher played villain mobster Carlo Hesser on “One Life to Live,” winning a Daytime Emmy for the role in 1992. His co-star Anthony Crivello lamented the industry’s loss in a heartfelt social media post on Tuesday. “He was always a gentleman, always supportive, and he and his wife Judith who proceeded him in death, where [sic] always gracious to me and welcoming,” Crivello wrote over two photographs of himself alongside Christopher. “Thom and I worked together on the #abc daytime series #onelifetolive in the 1990s. We’re seen here with the lovely #audrylanders who played my sister, and Thom my father.”

“It was a wonderful time, difficult hours and long days, but joyful each minute,” Crivello continued. “May Thom fly on Wings of Angels to be beside his beloved Judith, and may they enjoy each other’s company once again, beside the ‘Pearly Gates’ of heaven.”

Christopher was widowed in 2019 following the death of his longtime wife, Judith Leverone, at age 88. Born in October 1940, he attended Ithaca College before becoming a formally trained actor while attending the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. After a successful career on Broadway, Christopher transitioned to the seriousness of soaps, taking sporadic roles in “Guiding Light” and “The Edge of Night” in addition to “One Life to Live.”  He is also credited with appearances on “T.J. Hooker,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “Law & Order.”
