UFC Fighter Dies Suddenly At 33
Former UFC fighter Geane Herrera died tragically at the age of 33 after a deadly traffic accident, according to the New York Post.
Herrera, who was released by the organization in 2016, was killed in a motorcycle accident that occurred on Saturday in Tampa, Florida, according to multiple reports. The flyweight fighter was riding his bike around 10:45 p.m. when he crashed into another vehicle while traveling at a “high rate of speed,” authorities said. He was thrown from his bike after striking a concrete barrier and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California-born Herrera racked up an impressive 8-0 record before signing with the UFC in 2014. Between 2015 and 2016 he participated in four bouts, accumulating a 1-3 record before being released. In recent years he had participated in events with the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships, defeating Abdiel Velazquez by TKO in 2021.
Herrera leaves behind a teenage son and a pregnant girlfriend. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to support both of them in their time of grief.
“Geane was full of life, always trying to live life to the fullest, he was a dedicated athlete with big dreams of making a difference and leaving his print in this world. He was such a happy go lucky person that left a mark in everyone that came into his life,” Melissa Herrera wrote on the page. “Geane was a hustler and started doing all kinds of odd jobs to make ends meet and make sure his kids and family was taken care of. Geane coming from an immigrant family wanted to make the difference and make his Colombian-American community proud.”
“We tell his story because we want everyone to know the amazing person Geane was, a man full of passion, life, love and big dreams.”
Melissa Herrera added that the family expects to take on as much as $50,000 in bills as part of Herrera’s funeral.
“We are asking family, friends, fans, the UF community, the BKFC community, the fighting world and any stranger that can relate to our tragedy for support. Any little bit counts, please donate and help Geane’s family deal with this tragedy in any way. Geane you will always be in our hearts!”
Ray Borg, a fellow UFC fighter who defeated Herrera in his debut, paid tribute to his competitor in a statement. “He was a good guy, my prayers are with him and his family during this tough time,” Borg wrote on Instagram, according to the BBC.
Herrera’s death is another tragic example of athletes dying on the roads while driving too fast. Kelvin Kiptum, the Kenyan runner who recently set the world record for a near-sub two-hour marathon, was traveling in February with his coach in his home country when their car lost control and struck a tree, killing them both. Kiptum, who was behind the wheel, was just 24.
