On Monday, Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade took over as the host of “Fox News Tonight” in Tucker Carlson’s typical 8:00 PM EST weekday time slot.

Kilmeade backed down from explaining further details surrounding Carlson’s sudden departure from Fox News, which sparked headlines Monday morning. In his opening monologue, Kilmeade, speaking in Carlson’s usual time slot, offered a brief farewell to the widely popular Carlson.

“Hi everybody and welcome to Fox News Tonight. I am Brian Kilmeade. As you probably have heard, Fox News and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways,” Kilmeade began. ” I wish Tucker the best. I’m great friends with Tucker and always will be. But right now it’s time for Fox News Tonight, so let’s get started.”

The weak response to the news of Carlson’s departure infuriated conservatives across social media.

On Monday morning Fox News released a statement announcing Carlson’s departure:
