VIDEO: MLB Fan Slaps Spectator Sitting During National Anthem
A confrontation between two Chicago Cubs fans at Wrigley Field has exploded across social media after video captured an older spectator slapping a younger fan who remained seated during the national anthem before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
The scene occurred just before the Jersey Girls performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of first pitch. As thousands of fans stood for the anthem, one younger man stayed in his seat, prompting an angry response from the older fan sitting directly behind him.
Video of the encounter shows the older man leaning forward and repeatedly telling the younger spectator to “stand up.” After what appears to be a brief exchange between the two, the older fan reaches forward slaps the younger man on the back of the head.
The younger spectator then stands for the remainder of the anthem while the older man can be heard thanking him afterward.
Other fans seated nearby immediately turned to see what had happened, with several appearing surprised by the sudden confrontation. The younger man did not appear to retaliate, and the situation ended without a larger physical altercation.

The incident quickly became one of the most talked-about sports videos online, drawing sharp reactions. Social media users praised the older fan, arguing that standing during the national anthem is a sign of respect for the country, military members, and veterans.
Chicago police confirmed they are aware of the viral video but said no official police report had been filed regarding the incident. Without a complaint from the alleged victim or additional investigative steps, it remains unclear whether authorities will pursue the matter further.
Since former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, displays during the anthem have remained a politically charged topic. Neither the Chicago Cubs nor Major League Baseball had publicly commented on the incident as of Tuesday afternoon.
The identities of both fans also remain unknown. The game itself was a one-sided affair, with the Cubs cruising to a 10-1 victory over the Twins behind another strong performance from Shota Imanaga and contributions throughout the lineup.
