Vulnerable House Democrat Says Party Has Become Out Of Touch: ‘Full Resistance’
U.S. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), who is arguably the most vulnerable Democrat in the House, became the latest left-wing figure to criticize the direction of the Democratic Party in the wake of a thorough presidential election defeat.
Golden has represented Maine’s Second Congressional District, a largely rural area, since 2019. The district currently grades as R+6 according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index and was carried by President Trump by nearly 10 percentage points back in November.
As for Rep. Golden, the Democrat incumbent managed to hold on by less than 3,000 votes against former NASCAR driver Austin Theriault in a race that took several days to call. Golden was boosted by the state’s ranked choice voting system, which allows voters to rank candidates based on preference rather than casting a single vote.
While Golden has largely voted in line with the Democrat caucus, he recently became the lone House Democrat to support the body’s budget resolution, which was ultimately adopted by the Senate and signed into law by President Trump on Sunday. During an appearance on “Meet The Press” just hours before the bill was signed, Golden was asked whether the Democratic Party has yet developed a “cohesive message” by host Kristen Welker.
“No. In fact, after the election, when a lot of people like yourself were asking me to come on shows and talk about how the party would find a new direction, a stronger message,” the vulnerable Democrat answered.
“I warned that I thought, come Inauguration Day, a lot of people would move on, shift into full resistance and stop focusing on what we’re getting wrong, what do we have to offer the American people, and where do we go forward from here so that we’re not in this situation after the next election. I think it’s very important that Democrats not forget to focus in on ourselves, why the American people voted, not just for President Trump, but for a Republican-led Congress in both the Senate and the House,” he continued.
“And we better figure it out, how to make the case to the American people that they want us there after the 2026 election, with a House majority, to offer a check on that uncontrolled Republican power that we’re seeing in action today.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee recently listed Golden’s Congressional district as one of the top priorities to flip in the upcoming midterm elections in 2026. Other top flip candidates include Florida’s 23rd Congressional District, which holds a Cook PVI of D+1 and is currently occupied by Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat.
The NRCC also listed New York’s Third Congressional District towards the top of its list of 26 flip targets for the midterms. The seat is currently held by Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), who won a special election after former Rep. George Santos was expelled from Congress. The district is currently graded as D+2 on the Cook PVI and was one of 13 districts that elected a Democrat congressional representative despite voting for President Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
