WATCH: Adam Schiff Flees Reporter Amid Grilling On Alleged Fraud Scheme
Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) hastily ran away when approached by a reporter about the Trump Administration’s criminal referral against him for alleged mortgage fraud.
The allegation stems from an investigation from the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) sent a letter to the Department of Justice in May sounding the alarm that in “multiple instances,” the senator allegedly “falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003-2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property.”
FHFA is an independent federal agency that oversees Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Bank System. In a lengthy social media post Wednesday, President Donald Trump referred to his longtime nemesis as a “scam artist.”
On Thursday, the congressman was asked about the allegations by an independent reporter on Capitol Hill. “Senator, why did you decide to make your primary residence in Maryland for ten years? For a decade,” Schiff was asked as he was walking towards an elevator.
The senator remained silent as he entered the elevator. “Any comment on Trump accusing you of mortgage fraud sir? Any response?” the reporter followed up, at which point a smirking Schiff said, “have a nice day” before the elevator doors closed.

In a lengthy social media post Wednesday, Trump referred to his longtime nemesis as a “scam artist.”
“And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA.”
The allegations made against Schiff are similar to those levied against New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is tapping into a $10 million taxpayer-funded slush fund in order to defend herself against the mortgage fraud allegations.
James is accused of listing a Virginia property she purchased in 2023 as her “principal residence” despite serving as attorney general of New York at the time. New York requires its attorneys general to live in the state for five years before running for office, and requires them to reside there during their time in office.
A criminal referral sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte further alleged that James previously purchased a Brooklyn home in 2001, but has “consistently misrepresented the same property as only having four units in both building permit applications and numerous mortgage documents and applications,” Pulte noted. This could have allowed James to receive a lower mortgage rate and led to lower payments under the federal Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).
