WATCH: Biden Appears To Nod Off During Trans-Africa Summit

Published

President Joe Biden appears to have grown so tired of dodging questions about pardoning his son that he seemingly fell asleep during the Trans-Africa Summit in Angola on Wednesday.

Joined by the continent’s leaders along the Lobito Corridor, a major thoroughfare for the transcontinental economy, President Biden kept his face down and hidden behind his left hand while resting an elbow on the table. Kassim Majaliwa, Tanzania’s prime minister, was in the middle of touting a global investment in the region’s railway service and hopes of shared prosperity when a droopy-eyed Biden briefly appeared from behind his palm. Like a hungover college student during his morning class, Biden’s slumped posture and exhausted attitude suggested he’d have rather been anywhere else.

The moment was vintage Biden and a reminder to the world about why Democrats pushed him from the presidential race amid fears about his advanced age and declining mental acuity. The 81-year-old was guided around by African leaders like a toddler, the Western Journal reported, ferrying him between groups and events with gentle nudges and hands on his shoulders. Angola, ground zero for Chinese activity in the continent as it seeks to expand its global footprint, was also Tuesday’s best chance for Biden to show African countries that the U.S. would be a better friend in the long haul. Instead, he left observers dumbstruck with his sleepy nonsequiturs and scurrying from the media when pressed about his pardon for Hunter Biden. Angolan President João Lourenço was charged with guiding Biden for most of the day.

Video from the morning’s opening ceremony shows Lourenço patiently pointing out the red carpet President Biden should follow for a photo-op. The Democrat looks on with a confused expression before following his colleagues with the help of a pull on his arm by the Angolan president.

Biden’s travel travails have taken a backseat since he dropped out of the race in July, and especially more since President-elect Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. Before Biden’s disastrous debate in June, the world held its collective breath with every trip, stumble, or outright fall to see whether the leader of the free world would wake up tomorrow. In 2022 he was caught practically falling asleep during a televised interview, a feat he repeated in 2023 when Israel’s prime minister visited the White House. For these instances and others, Trump tagged the president with the “Sleepy Joe” moniker from which he never recovered.
