WATCH: CNN Guest Panics About Trump, Says She’ll Be Deported: ‘Could Be Taken Away!’

A CNN guest melted down on air Monday as she expressed her fear that President-elect Donald Trump would deport her for being a naturalized citizen.

Maria Cardona, a Democratic strategist and regular contributor on the network, said her status as a naturalized citizen could provoke deportation proceedings under a second Trump administration. Her newfound fear comes after Trump told NBC News’s Kristen Welker that he is exploring how to end or amend birthright citizenship, a right guaranteed under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. Allies like Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) have come to Trump’s defense, suggesting that Congress has the power to delineate which residents are subject to the amendment and which may not be, such as illegal immigrants.

“Stephen Miller, who is Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff, has said that they’re going to embark on a denaturalization program. So I could be deported, my citizenship could be taken away, and my children could be deported because they have birthright citizenship,” Cardona said, her voice rising. “So, this is not what the country voted for, let’s be very clear.”

She continued: “Americans voted for Trump because of groceries, because of lowering costs. He has not talked about that one bit. What this country did not vote for was to deport the eleven million undocumented immigrants who do critical work for our economy, who have injected seven trillion dollars into our economy. And what Americans want is a solution to immigration.” She repeated several Democratic talking points about being “willing to work” with Republicans to solve the border crisis before the host cut her off and moved on.

Cardona’s on-air apoplexy is just the latest salvo against Trump, who rode into office on a promise to close the southern border and has worked to do so since receiving a mandate on Election Day. He has met privately with the president of Mexico and the prime minister of Canada, both of whom have promised to step up enforcement against illegal crossings and the proliferation of fentanyl into America. President-elect Trump has cited the deadly synthetic opioid as a “scourge” afflicting the country as a result of cartel smuggling operations, which grew dramatically under the Biden-Harris administration.

Granting air time to guests like Cardona threatens to further saddle CNN with poor ratings resulting from its critical coverage of Trump during the campaign season. Recent ratings sweeps have put the once venerable network below competitors like MSNBC, Newsmax, and even the Hallmark Channel and its lineup of holiday romcoms. Leadership is torn between embracing the center-right realignment of the country — with guests like Scott Jennings and data analysts such as Harry Enten — or shifting to the left as it did with Jim Acosta under Trump’s first term. Anchor Jake Tapper, meanwhile, is being sued for defamation after false reporting about a Navy veteran working in Afghanistan, threatening to blight the network with its own “Dominion”-style defamation lawsuit. Over the weekend, longtime “Newsroom” anchor Alisyn Camerota announced her departure, another body blow for the once venerable network.
