WATCH: Committing Crimes Does Not Make Someone A Criminal, Crockett Says

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) raised eyebrows during a recent appearance on the “Getting Better” podcast with Jonathan Van Ness that committing a crime does not make one a criminal.

“Understanding what ends up having people become criminally impacted really informs so much of what I do legislatively, right? So when people are like, oh, you know, crime is terrible. And yes, it is, right? Like, because when somebody goes out and commits a crime, they don’t typically, you know, say, well, I’m a D or I’m a R or I’m a I,” the congresswoman said.

“And so I understood what was kind of pushing them there. And so I do want people to know that just because someone has committed a crime, it doesn’t make them a criminal. That is completely different. Being a criminal is more so about your mindset. Committing a crime can come for a lot of different reasons.”

Crockett has long been a proponent of “criminal justice reform” policies like sending social workers to respond to certain calls instead of police, defunding police budgets and eliminating cash bail.

“I want to be clear that, like, law enforcement isn’t to prevent crime. Law enforcement solves crime, OK? That is what they are supposed to do. They are supposed to solve crimes, not necessarily prevent them from happening per se,” she said during an appearance on the “Grounded” podcast earlier this month.

Crockett, one of the far-left’s wing’s most outspoken and polarizing figures, shared her opinion while discussing the end to a federal takeover in Washington, D.C. President Donald Trump has celebrated the 30-day operation as a rousing success amid plummeting crime statistics in the nation’s capital.

“I think it has been terrible,” the lawmaker said about Trump’s use of the National Guard to put soldiers in the streets.

“How is it that we have a government that is hostile towards its people? ‘Cause that’s what it is. Like, I mean, we are in the midst of a hostile government takeover, and it is our government that is like, bringing the hostility.”
