WATCH: Dem Senator Humiliated After Embarrassing Slip-Up In First-Ever Address To Chamber
NFL fans are savaging Democratic U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) after she made a mockery of her hometown team during her inaugural speech on the Senate floor Thursday.
Coupled with an oversized pantsuit and some declarative slaps on the podium, Slotkin’s remarks rang hollow for fans of the Detroit Lions who didn’t appreciate her making their team the butt of a joke about how Democrats will claw their way back from the wilderness.
Reactions to the freshman senator’s stump speech ranged from nonplussed to freshly outraged as social media users vied to weigh in on the comments, which have since gone viral. Slotkin’s “love letter to Michigan” turned out to be anything but as the 49-year-old’s social media account was inundated with critics on both the right and the left.
Americans will escape this “extremely tough time” if they only listen to Democrats, Slokin declared before crossing into foul territory.
“For God’s sake people, the Detroit Lions are going to win the national championship and the Super Bowl and they were in the toilet for years!” she exclaimed.
But the NFL jargon police were quick to point out that the Super Bowl is the league’s final and that there is no “national championship” Slotkin spoke of.
“This is just another example of how embarrassing it is when politicians try to pretend to be like everyday people,” one X user responded to the clip.
Another, quoting the video, posted, “How not to win back the male vote in under 20 seconds.”
“Sen. Elissa Slotkin attempts to do a football analogy and fails miserably,” a third joked, per the Daily Mail.
“They all do this and it’s extremely cringe.’ Another added, ‘Democrats always fail at the pretending to be normal thing,” said a fourth, accusing Slotkin of “diminishing Michigan with her stupidity and lack of common sense.”

It appears Slotkin was referencing the Lions’ appearance in the 2024 NFL Playoffs, a run that ended well short of the Super Bowl in the divisional round. Their winning season was a high-water mark for the team, which had gone more than three decades without reaching the divisional round of the playoffs.
“Everyone here knows that we’re going through an extremely tough time in American politics,” she said earlier in her remarks.
“We know that when people look back on this period in history, they’re going to say that was the moment that Americans were turned against each other… but it is not the end and it’s not always going to be this way.”
Slotkin starts her career in the Senate after being elevated from the U.S. House, where Democrats are also in the minority and locked out of power until at least after the 2026 elections. She narrowly defeated former Rep. Mike Rogers in a state that President Trump carried on Election Day.
