WATCH: Democrat Governor Appears To Blame Charlie Kirk For His Own Assassination

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) is facing sharp criticism after remarks in which he appeared to suggest that slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk bore responsibility for the political climate that led to his death.

Speaking in the hours after the September 10 shooting at Utah Valley University, Pritzker framed Kirk as a “divisive” figure whose rhetoric may have fueled the violence.

“We don’t know any of the full details of this,” Pritzker said. “We don’t know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration, or—we have no idea about this. But, following up with what was just said, he’s been one of the most divisive—especially divisive—young figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech aimed at certain groups.”

Pritzker added, “I always go back to: hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. I think that’s the environment we’re in. People just—you can’t stop with these awful thoughts you have, then say these awful words, and not expect awful actions to take place.”

The remarks came as Americans are still processing the shocking assassination of Kirk, 31, who was fatally shot in the neck while addressing students as part of his “American Comeback Tour.”

The tragedy unfolded around midday Wednesday, when Kirk stood under an outdoor tent on campus to take questions. A single gunshot rang out, striking him in the neck and triggering immediate chaos. Bystander footage showed students screaming and scattering while security and first responders rushed to the scene.

Kirk was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. His death was first confirmed publicly by President Donald Trump on Truth Social, where he called Kirk “Great, and even Legendary” and asked for prayers for his family.

Authorities initially detained one person, but police later confirmed the individual was not the shooter. As of press time, the suspect remains at large. Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting local law enforcement in the investigation.

Utah Valley University immediately locked down its campus and canceled classes. Students were ordered to either shelter in place or evacuate under the guidance of law enforcement while buildings were searched.

Kirk spent more than a decade building Turning Point USA into one of the nation’s most prominent youth conservative movements. Through his activism, Kirk inspired thousands of students to engage in politics and reject progressive orthodoxy on campuses often hostile to conservative viewpoints.

Born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 while still a teenager. The group grew into a powerful organization with chapters on hundreds of college and high school campuses. Kirk also hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, a popular podcast and radio program that reached millions weekly.

He was known for his debate style, his sharp critiques of the political left, and his close ties with top Republican leaders, including President Trump. Kirk’s appearances routinely drew packed audiences, and his “Prove Me Wrong” sessions became a signature feature on college campuses nationwide.
