WATCH: Democrat Senator Starts Screaming About Trump During Insane Meltdown
In a fiery Senate hearing that has since gone viral, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) suffered what many consider to be a massive temper tantrum. During the proceedings, Bennet launched into an impassioned tirade against Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bennet accused Bessent of backing fiscal policy that exacerbated national debt and favored the wealthy.
The Colorado senator’s anger was focused primarily on proposed tax cuts and spending reductions that he believes would negatively impact millions of Americans. According to Bennet, the Treasury Secretary’s focus on slashing domestic discretionary spending, which only makes up 15 percent of the budget, was not adequate to address the deficit.
Bennet also attacked the Treasury’s plan to allegedly reduce healthcare for 10 million people (mostly illegals), cut into food assistance programs, and phase out investments in clean energy. His main gripe was the plan’s provision of so-called tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.
“This bill adds another $2.4 trillion to our national debt,” Bennet yelled, getting more and more animated. He then said that while everyday Americans suffer under the weight of inflation and high interest rates, he accused the GOP of continuing to push for policies that benefit the elite and saddle future generations with debt. “We now pay more in interest than we do for national defense,” he emphasized, framing the fiscal trajectory as both unsustainable and morally indefensible.
WATCH:
Bessent immediately pushed back by making the case that the current financial crisis was one that was inherited from the Biden administration. He pointed out that interest rates reached their highest while Joe Biden was president.
The response only served to make Bennet’s temperature rise even higher. He leveled accusations at the Republican Party of willful hypocrisy and selective amnesia concerning the consequences of tax cuts from Trump’s administration.
Political analysts have stated that the explosion by Bennet was less about impassioned beliefs and more about political theater, creating drama to craft a narrative that would stir up Democrat voters.
A statistic that has been pointed out pours cold water on Bennet’s anger over tax breaks for the wealthy. Data has revealed that the top 5 percent of income earners currently pay over 50 percent of federal income taxes. According to this information, the proposed cuts are proportionate.
Some analysts have pointed out that Bessent’s plan is just a rollback of benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic to their pre-COVID eligibility standards and not an actual removal of needed aid.
