WATCH: Jasmine Crockett Descends Into Profane Meltdown During Hearing Amid Swirling Scandals
A bizarre scene unfolded on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning when “Squad” Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), apparently buckling under the pressure of multiple controversies, lashed out during a committee hearing, accusing Republicans of trying to “shut down” dissenting voices in the media.
The two-term Texas Democrat was in the middle of querying a witness about the supposed detrimental effects that Texas residents would suffer if Congress and the Trump administration moved to strip funding from NPR and PBS, two prominent mainstream media outlets that collect a percentage of their revenue from federal subsidies.
Shortly thereafter, Rep. Crockett announced she would “skip off real quick” and asked another witness if she was not working at NPR when she previously made allegedly biased comments on a particular issue.
“That is correct,” replied PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger.
That was the springboard Crockett needed to spend nearly a minute accusing Republicans of perpetrating a sham hearing into media outlets where whistleblowers have claimed that 90% or more of reporters are registered Democrats.
“Let’s be clear: Free speech is not about whatever it is y’all want somebody to say, and the idea that you want to shut down everybody that is not Fox News is bullshit,” the Squad member yelled, pointing around the room.
“We need to stop playing, cuz that’s what y’all are doing in here,” she went on. “You don’t want to hear the opinions of anybody else.”
Eventually, committee chair Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a frequent foil of Crockett, gaveled her into silence when her time expired.
WATCH:
In less than a week, Crockett has shot to infamy after using a derogatory nickname to refer to wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, and appearing to assault an independent journalist asking her about the nationwide vandalism at Tesla dealerships.
On Tuesday, Crockett issued a rebuttal of the criticism over Abbott, saying she referred to him as “Governor Hot Wheels” in a speech because of the “planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants” into majority-black communities around the country. The “non-apology” was quickly condemned across social media.
Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), a fellow member of the Texas delegation, announced he will soon introduce a resolution to censure Crockett for what he described as “vile” and “discriminatory” rhetoric.
“The story of our great governor of Texas is one of unwavering resilience and perseverance,” Weber told Fox News. “Meanwhile, the actions of Jasmine Crockett – stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks – are nothing short of reprehensible.”
Consternation over the direction of the Democratic Party and its all-time low approval rating among Americans has led Squad members to jockey for leadership positions in Congress. In January, Crockett unsuccessfully challenged longtime establishment Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) for chairmanship of the House Democrats’ communications committee, a position which would have given her a megaphone to project her attacks against President Trump and congressional Republicans.
