WATCH: Kamala’s Supporters Somberly Leave Election Watch Party After Brutal Night

A somber uncertainty hung in the early morning air above Vice President Kamala Harris’s election night party Wednesday morning as droves of supporters silently filed out from the grounds of Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Harris did not speak, drawing the night to a close for hundreds or more of diverse supporters who turned out in hopes of a victory over President-elect Donald Trump. Footage from Brazilian news outlet Metrópoles captured the stoic reactions from foot-shuffling groups of young people. Only a brief chuckle or remark punctured the silence that weighted down emotions in the face of Trump’s decisive victory.

Nabila Mangum, 31, attended the rally and told the BBC that the event turned sour after North Carolina was declared for Trump. “The energy went down,” she said. “But, we’re not finished. It’s not over until it’s done.” Cheryl Taylor, the Howard alum who tapped Harris to join the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, said that Harris will always be a leader to her. “She was amazing. Beautiful, smart, a good person,” she said. Asked about Trump’s remark that Harris only recently “became Black,” Taylor shot back, “We don’t question that here.”

Howard University is a historically Black college, one of many to receive a boost in federal funding under President-elect Trump. There was no credit for his work Tuesday night as the realization settled in that the country’s 45th president would soon become its 47th. ABC News reported that the eyes of supporters grew muted and tears flowed as they silently checked their phones into the early hours of Wednesday morning. Campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond told the crowd shortly after midnight that Harris would not be speaking and planned to address the nation at a later time the following day.

A carnival-like atmosphere at Mar-a-Lago could not have been more different as President Trump celebrated with supporters like Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL), both of whom won their reelection campaigns Tuesday. The Republican was ebullient as he congratulated “Vice President-elect J.D. Vance” before throngs of supporters in West Palm Beach. “We’re gonna do things that nobody else is gonna be able to do,” Trump said. “China doesn’t have what we have, nobody has what we have. But we have the greatest people also, maybe that’s the most important thing. This campaign has been so historic in so many ways. We’ve built the biggest, the broadest, the most unified coalition — they’ve never seen anything like it in all of American history.”

Going on: “Young and old, men and women, rural and urban, and we had them all helping us tonight when you think. They had some great analysis of the people who voted for us. Nobody’s ever seen anything like that. They came from all corners: union, non-union, African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American, Arab-American, Muslim-American, we had everybody and it was beautiful. It was a historic realignment uniting citizens of all backgrounds around a common core of common sense.”
