WATCH: Biden Stares Blankly When Asked About Re-Election Chances Before L.A. Mayor Answers For Him
President Biden froze up and appeared confused when he was asked about his re-election prospects at a Los Angeles campaign event. As Biden stared blankly at the reporter, L.A. mayor Karen Bass stepped in and gave an answer for the president.
The audio from the clip was tough to make out, though a reporter appeared to ask about Biden’s re-election chances, as well as the president’s State of The Union address plans for 2024. As Biden stared on and appeared to be muttering a response, Bass stepped in and declared that “he’s gonna win re-election anyway.”
Prior to the mayor’s answer — which was met with cheers and applause from onlookers — someone could be heard saying “alright,” at which point Biden’s team cleared reporters from the room.
The latest display of public confusion comes as polling continues to measure significant voter concern over the president’s age and mental fitness. According to January’s Harvard/CAPS Harris poll, 63 percent of registered voters said they have “doubts” about Biden’s mental fitness and ability to run the country. An additional 69 percent of respondents said Biden is too old to be president.
Concerns over the president’s mental fitness have intensified in recent weeks after Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was appointed to investigate Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, concluded that juries would perceive Biden as old and forgetful if charges were brought. While Hur did acknowledge that Biden mishandled classified documents — something his main political rival is facing multiple felony charges for — he opted not to bring charges due to Biden’s perceived lack of mental fitness.
