WATCH: Lifelong Democrat Snaps, Publicly Ditches Party Over Government Shutdown On C-Span
A fed-up Pennsylvania Democrat lit up C-SPAN on Tuesday, saying she’s done voting blue after watching her own party plunge the country into chaos with the ongoing government shutdown.
The shutdown began Oct. 1, when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer led nearly every Senate Democrat in blocking a bipartisan funding deal. Now, with food aid for millions of Americans about to run dry, even loyal Democrats are reaching their breaking point.
“I am a Pennsylvania Democrat. And I would like to tell my party and those that the American people voted for to be sitting in those chairs that they need to vote yes,” the woman said on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal.”
“I don’t know if everybody gets their news from social media, but I have watched for the past couple of days the YouTube and the people that are receiving the benefits stating what their plans are. And I don’t want to be in the grocery store when this goes down.”
Then she dropped the hammer: “I have a problem with my party, and I’m not going to change my party. I just won’t vote for a Democrat.”

Her frustration echoes what millions of Americans fear. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which feeds more than 40 million people nationwide, is expected to lose funding on Nov. 1 unless Congress ends the standoff. Several states have already warned they’ll have to freeze benefits if Washington doesn’t act.
But Schumer and Senate Democrats keep digging in, filibustering GOP attempts to reopen the government while demanding add-ons like Obamacare subsidy extensions and other liberal wish-list items.
Even some of their own voters have had enough. A retired federal worker — also a Democrat — phoned in to “Washington Journal” a day earlier, ripping her party for refusing to compromise.
“[T]hey have to get together and stop holding Americans hostage. We’re about to have people without food come, what, November 1st, which is the end of this week,” she said. “And that’s ridiculous. It is not worth it.”
