Former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney suggested that former President Ronald Reagan would be supporting Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in an interview with ABC.
Earlier this week, Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, made an unsurprising move to endorse the Harris-Walz ticket. The chief architect of the Iraq War has repeatedly referred to former President Trump as the “greatest threat” the United States has ever faced and has falsely accused him of attempting to “violently overturn” the results of the 2020 election, ignoring the fact that Trump followed constitutionally protected legal procedures and told the crowd to remain peaceful on January 6, 2021.
Liz Cheney — who was unanimously censured by the Wyoming Republican Party before being thoroughly rejected by voters — echoed her father’s delusional rhetoric about the January 6 Capitol protests during an appearance on ABC News on Sunday.
CAST YOUR VOTE: Should Voter ID Be Mandatory In The 2024 Election?
“Yeah, I, you know, I’ve been voting for 40 years. My first vote I ever cast was for Ronald Reagan in 1984. I’ve never voted for a Democrat,” Cheney said, drawing a fawning reaction from ABC’s Jonathan Karl.
“And it tells you, I think, the stakes in this election. You know, Donald Trump presents a challenge and a threat fundamentally to the republic. We see it on a daily basis. Somebody who was willing to use violence in order to attempt to seize power, to stay in power, someone who represents unrecoverable catastrophe, frankly, in my view,” the former congresswoman continued. “We have to do everything possible to ensure that he doesn’t, that he’s not re-elected.”
Cheney further argued that it is “not enough” to simply not vote for Trump and called on Republicans to vote for Kamala Harris. “Given how close this race is, in my view again, it’s not enough. You have many Republicans out there who are saying, ‘well, you know, we’re not going to vote for him, but we will write someone else in. And I think that this time around, that’s not enough,” she said, ignoring consistent polling that shows near unanimous support for the former president among Republican voters.
“It’s important to actually cast a vote for Vice President Harris.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Cheney claimed that the late Ronald Reagan would never support former President Trump.
“There is absolutely no chance that Ronald Reagan would be supporting Donald Trump. Donald Trump doesn’t stand for any of the things that Ronald Reagan did. And it’s another place where I would urge my Republican colleagues, both in the Congress but across the country, to really look at Donald Trump’s policies, to really look at the danger that he presents, to look at, you know, what he was willing to do to stay in,” she said.
“It’s a firm rejection not just of traditional Republican policies but of the constitutional order on which this country depends.”
