WATCH: Pelosi Lies Again When Asked Why Trump Impeachment Was Different
Nancy Pelosi, the powerbroker Democratic congresswoman who led impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump as House Speaker, spun an outright falsehood when asked Thursday morning why her attempt to oust a president was different from that of her successors today.
Speaking on MSNBC, Rep. Pelosi (D-CA) was asked about her criticism of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to launch an impeachment inquiry without allowing the entire House to vote on its approval. Given she “set this precedent” according to McCarthy, the host asked Pelosi why his proceedings be treated differently.
“I say that that’s hogwash. I mean it’s ridiculous, and I don’t know why the press keeps repeating it,” said Pelosi.

In October 2019, then-Speaker Pelosi rejected calls from President Trump and House Republicans to hold a vote on her decision to impeach Trump over allegations he pressured the president of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden. After meeting with Democratic leadership, Pelosi claimed a full vote was not necessary because her investigation was well underway.
“There’s no requirement that we have a vote,” Pelosi said at the time, according to USA Today. “We’re not here to call bluffs. We’re here to find the truth to uphold the Constitution of the United States. This is not a game for us. This is deadly serious.”
The Constitution gives the House the “sole power of impeachment” and offers few details on how the process should take place. During President Trump’s first impeachment, some Democrats suggested holding a full House vote in case the courts ruled that such a move was necessary to begin proceedings. Then-Speaker Pelosi quashed the idea by saying she had all the power needed to compel testimony.
The California congresswoman’s latest falsehood will fuel the narrative that Democrats said one thing about President Trump, but are now doing another once the same precedent has been applied to a Democratic president. A fallback position — that Republicans have no evidence of wrongdoings that warrant an impeachment inquiry — has taken hits as GOP leaders like House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) have laid out the reasons why potential wrongdoings by President Biden must be investigated.
