WATCH: RINO Senator Doubles Down On Opposition To The SAVE ACT

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) doubled down on her opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a House-passed election integrity bill that includes voter ID requirements.

Murkowski was asked about her stance on passing the legislation outright, as well ask ongoing discussions over the Senate’s filibuster rules. Under the current procedures, legislation can be blocked if it fails to meet the 60-vote threshold to invoke cloture and end debate. This is commonly referred to as the “zombie filibuster.”

Dozens of Senate Republicans have called on Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to instead deploy the “talking filibuster,” which requires senators in opposition to physically debate the legislation in question. This way, Republicans could pass the legislation with a simple majority of 51 votes.

When asked about the ongoing discussions by Lindell TV, Murkowski indicated that she is opposed to the bill outright. “Where do you stand on the Save America Act? Do you support getting this legislation passed to protect our elections?” Murkowski was asked, to which she replied, “Not as it is drafted, no.”

When asked why not, Murkowski claimed that it would “disenfranchise” voters in her state. “The implementation in a rural state like Alaska is gonna disenfranchise an extraordinary majority. And while I support citizenship voting and voting ID, I wanna make sure that it’s implementable,” the senator elaborated.

Murkowski had previously signaled that she would not support the bill due to what she referred to as state’s rights issues.

“When Democrats attempted to advance sweeping election reform legislation in 2021, Republicans were unanimous in opposition because it would have federalized elections, something we have long opposed,” Murkowski announced in an X post last month.

The senator was speaking in reference to the Democrat-backed John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a 2021 bill that would have instituted measures like automatic voter registration, expanded early voting and bans on election integrity proposals outlined in the SAVE Act. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has already indicated that he will push Democrats to abolish the zombie filibuster in order to pass the bill should Democrats regain control of the chamber.

The SAVE ACT, which has already passed in the House, requires individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections. It amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by mandating that states verify citizenship in person and prohibits registration without such documentation.

The bill also directs states to establish alternative processes for applicants lacking standard documents and enhances voter list maintenance to remove noncitizens.

If enacted, the SAVE Act would standardize citizenship verification across states for federal elections in order to crack down on noncitizen voting. States would need to update registration systems immediately upon enactment, without additional federal funding, potentially requiring adjustments to online, mail-in, and drive-through registration processes.

While Thune had previously expressed support for the talking filibuster maneuver, he has since backtracked and claims he does not have the votes. He has also claimed that “paid influencers” are pushing lawmakers to support the bill despite it being a top legislative priority of President Trump’s.
