WATCH: Scott Jennings Makes Liberal CNN Panelist Lose It During Heated Segment
A heated debate about the treatment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers briefly devolved into a shouting match between liberal panelists on CNN as Scott Jennings, the lone voice of reason, smiled and kept his composure.
State and local crackdowns on ICE agents, including policies prohibiting the use of masks or requiring them to wear identifying insignia, are forcing immigration authorities to become more creative about staging stings across the U.S. Most recently, ICE officers were seen spilling out of a U-Haul truck for their operation, forgoing the unmistakable black SUVs that have sent alarm bells ringing on apps designed to alert illegal immigrants to their locations.
Jennings praised Republicans for offering bigger signing bonuses to new ICE recruits while chastising Democrats for putting them in harm’s way, a comment that didn’t sit well with liberal panelist Ana Kasparian.
“Republicans right now are trying to recruit and give bonuses to people who want to serve in ICE. Democrats right now and people on the left are encouraging violence against people who want to serve in ICE,” he observed before the groaning began.
“How are they encouraging violence?” Kasparian asked while Jennings finished making his point. “You’re just gonna make a declarative statement without a shred of evidence? How are Democrats encouraging?”
“Democrats every day are calling them the Gestapo,” replied Jennings, referring to the secretive Nazi police service.
“Well, they do act like Gestapo!” his opponent exclaimed. “I don’t want my tax dollars going to that garbage!”
Other panelists remained hushed as Jennings and Kasparian squared off. Jennings asked first whether Kasparian believes that far-left rioters who assault ICE officers should be arrested.
“Those people who do that get arrested and should be,” she conceded, to which he shot back, “And why are they doing that? They’ve been told ICE agents are Gestapo!”
Kasparian laid out how widespread arrests of illegal immigrants in hotbeds like Los Angeles “might” lead to violence against ICE officers, which is understandable, in her eyes.
“It sounds like you’re condoning it,” Jennings said with a shrug.
Unrepentant, Kasparian responded darkly: “Let me tell you something: Someone messes with my family, I get violent.”
“Okay, good to know,” Jennings said as he looked at the camera. “There’s a violent streak in the country right now.”
Among liberal guests, Kasparian is one of the most extreme. She honed her on-screen skills as a producer and host for The Young Turks, an ultra-progressive online program that gained popularity in the late 2010s.
However, she hasn’t been afraid to venture into the lion’s den, as she did last month by appearing on Tucker Carlson’s podcast. Despite their ideological differences, the two media minds were able to find common ground on a number of fronts, including the importance of keeping the United States a sovereign country free from foreign meddling.
