WATCH: ‘The View’ Hosts Seethe As They Realize Alvin Bragg’s Trial Is Helping Trump

ABC’s “The View” co-hosts expressed their growing concern on Monday that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s high-profile trial against former President Donald Trump might actually be boosting his 2024 presidential campaign. The trial, centered on Trump’s plea of not guilty to 34 counts related to falsifying business records, has dominated headlines, overshadowing other significant news items.

Ex-lawyer Michael Cohen, the prosecution’s star witness, testified on Monday in the case alleging hush money payments made to actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. As the prosecution wraps up its list of witnesses, anticipation builds around the defense’s forthcoming arguments.

Drama also unfolded on the set of “The View,” where the co-hosts debated the trial’s unintended media repercussions. Sara Haines highlighted the media’s obsessive coverage, noting, “I would say when you say the Biden campaign has to get more active, I actually blame the media slightly. We talked last week a lot about how I don’t think people are able to watch this Trump trial 24-7. Now we’re talking about we’re in a campaign.”

“The irony is the people covering that news think they’re getting one up on Donald Trump while they’re handing him a lot of votes because of the coverage. It’s ridiculous,” she complained.

Ana Navarro chimed in, supporting Haines’s view and pointing out the strategic disadvantage for the Biden campaign. “I actually think this trial is somewhat helping Donald Trump because it’s keeping him off the trail and because we are not focusing on the stupid stuff he says on a daily basis. And that is helping him.”

As the trial continues to command attention, the question remains whether the Democrats can adjust its spotlight to illuminate the full spectrum of urgent issues facing voters, rather than inadvertently propelling Trump’s campaign forward with excessive coverage.

In recent polls, Americans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Biden administration, such as their their inability to afford everyday expenses from gas to groceries — 41% of Gallup respondents named inflation as the most important issue facing the economy, overshadowing any accomplishments Biden could claim credit for on other fronts.

Trump, meanwhile, has largely united the GOP base while remaining in the spotlight during his criminal trial, stoking sympathy from supporters who “see him as a martyr” and undecided voters who may come to believe that his trials as “politically motivated.”

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria admitted, “Trump could always embroil himself in some kind of scandal, but trend-lines are not working in Biden’s favor,” he added. “I have to admit, none of this is playing out as I thought it would.”

“As someone worried about the prospects of a second Trump term, I think it’s best to be honest about reality,” Zakaria told viewers, adding that polls have “tended to underestimate” the well of support Trump draws among registered and likely voters. “I doubt that there are many shy Biden voters in the country.”
