On Wednesday Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was attacked in her courtroom by a three-time felon, Deobra Redden. The attack occurred during the sentencing hearing, following the judge’s decision to deny probation to Redden.
Redden, 30, was in court for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. The situation escalated rapidly when Judge Holthus denied Redden’s request for probation. In a shocking outburst, Redden jumped over the bench, attacking the judge.
The courtroom descended into chaos as Redden was eventually subdued, but not before injuring a marshal in the process.
Despite the sudden attack, Judge Holthus managed to duck for cover, narrowly avoiding more serious harm. She hit her head during the tussle but was reported to be in OK condition according to 8 News Now. Her quick response and the immediate action of the court personnel were pivotal in preventing a more severe outcome.
Redden, with a history of domestic violence and previous convictions, had been deemed competent in October after a mental health evaluation. His criminal record includes threats of violence and a history of non-compliance with court orders. This adds to a string of legal troubles for Redden, who now faces additional charges of battery and battery on a protected person.
“Thank God the judge is okay,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said. “Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and her law clerk. Without them, the situation would have been much worse as this defendant exhibited extremely violent behavior and I’m confident there will be consequences.”
Holthus, elected to the bench in 2018 after a long tenure in the district attorney’s office, is expected to continue her duties.
