WATCH: Tom Homan Debunks Claims That Admin Is ‘Backing Off’ Deportation Strategy
White House border czar Tom Homan pushed back on claims that the Trump Administration is “backing off” its mass deportations agenda in response to leftist unrest in Democrat-controlled cities.
Homan responded to reports that federal immigration enforcement was set to slow down following the Border Patrol-involved shooting of Alex Pretti, a Minneapolis-based anti-ICE agitator who was shot while attacking federal agents and attempting to reach for a handgun. The shooting set off days of sustained unrest and rioting before Minnesota Governor Tim Walz capitulated to the White House and ordered local law enforcement to intervene.
Both President Trump and Walz described the call as “productive,” with Trump indicating that some assets would be redeployed with local police now offering assistance. The president also told reporters that “we’re going to de-escalate” a little bit and announced that Homan would be personally traveling to Minneapolis in order to oversee operations there.
While speaking with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Homan clarified that the administration has no intention of backing down on its deportation agenda. “If anybody thinks that Tom Homan, if President Trump, isn’t serious about immigration enforcement and having a mass deportation, then they weren’t paying attention,” he said.
He further clarified, “To set the record straight, because my staff said they’ve seen a lot of people that say President Trump’s backing off on his promise of mass deportation — that’s just untrue.”

Regarding overall deportation numbers, Homan has provided concrete figures that demonstrate the scale of the operation. In recent statements, he revealed that the administration has already conducted over 700,000 deportations, with plans to accelerate efforts.
“If you’re here illegally, you’re not off the table! We’ll find you too! We’ll deport you too,” he told Fox News. Homan further noted that based on immigration court data, nearly 9 out of 10 recent arrivals will ultimately receive removal orders due to asylum fraud.
Federal immigration agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have rapidly expanded operations in recent weeks due to new hires entering service.
The hiring spike follows a recruitment drive enabled by increased funding, aimed at enhancing immigration enforcement operations. As of early 2026, these new personnel are being deployed to field offices and participating in ongoing activities, such as targeted arrests in various cities, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed.
The hiring process was facilitated through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law by President Trump last July. Most notably, the legislation allocated $8 billion specifically for ICE hiring, with the goal of adding 10,000 new positions over a one-year time period.
ICE has reported an astonishing surge in applications, with more than 220,000 Americans applying for open positions. This allowed the agency to exceed its target and onboard 12,000 individuals in less than six months.
