WATCH: Trump Puts Gavin Newsom On Notice, Hints At Increased Military Involvement
President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested that National Guard and U.S. Military deployments in California may continue throughout the duration of his term if Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are unable to address disorder and rising political violence ahead of the 2028 Olympics, which are set to be hosted in the City of Angels.
In response to the widespread rioting and politically-motivated attacks on federal agents that plagued Los Angeles and parts of Orange County in June, Trump took control of the California National Guard in order to defend federal property and personnel from attack. In addition to deploying thousands of National Guard troops, Trump also dispatched a detachment of U.S. Marines to assist with the operation.
The deployment has continued under the discretion of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for several weeks. In that time period, military personnel have at times assisted with deportation operations in Southern California.
On Tuesday, President Trump signed an executive order creating a task force that will help with planning and overseeing the 2028 Olympic Games. When announcing the task force, Trump took direct aim at Newsom in suggesting that military assets could remain in place throughout the duration of his term.
“The other thing is we’ll do anything necessary to keep the Olympics safe, including using our National Guard or military. OK, no, I’ll use I’ll use I will use the National Guard or military. This is going to be so safe,” the president said.
Trump went on to describe Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass as “not very competent,” pointing to her inability to quell the unrest in her city and abysmal response to last year’s fires. “And I was there right after the fires and I saw all these beautiful people standing by their homes, ready to get in and get to work. And they’re waiting for their permits, and they’re still waiting for their state permits and city permits,” the president added, concluding with, “It’s a disgrace.”
The Olympics Task Force, which will be chaired by the president himself, will coordinate security and transportation efforts across various arms of the federal government, while also working to “streamline visa processing and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media,” according to a White House fact sheet distributed Tuesday.
Trump was joined at the ceremony by several other members of the task force, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr. Former Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin and Paralympic swimmer Brad Snyder were also on hand for the signing.
Casey Wasserman, the chairperson of the 2028 Los Angeles organizing committee, praised Trump’s efforts to secure the Los Angeles games during his first term in office. “In just 1,074 days − yes we’re counting, sir − the eyes of the world will be on this country,” Wasserman said. “These will be truly America’s Games.”
