WATCH: Trump Shares Glimpse Into Conversations With Melania During Hilarious Tangent
President Donald Trump gave supporters an unfiltered and comedic look into his private conversations with First Lady Melania Trump, launching into a long, off the cuff tangent that had the crowd laughing while offering insight into how Melania reacts to some of his more theatrical moments.
The moment came as Trump described how his wife often cringes when he imitates certain figures on stage, including his frequent mockery of transgender weightlifters, a bit that reliably draws cheers from rally crowds but less enthusiasm at home.
“And my wife, by the way, my wife hates when I do this,” Trump said Tuesday at the Kennedy Center during an address at the House GOP Member Retreat. “She said, you know, she’s a very classy person, right? She said, ‘It’s so unpresidential.’ I said, ‘But I did become president.’”
“She hates when I dance,” he said. “I said, everybody wants me to dance. ‘Darling, it’s not presidential.’” According to Trump, Melania even invoked history in her attempt to rein him in.
“She actually said, could you imagine FDR dancing?” Trump told the audience. “She said that to me. And I said, there’s a long history that perhaps she doesn’t know because he was an elegant fellow, even as a Democrat.”
As far back as the 1980s and 1990s, Trump was occasionally seen at social events making stiff, playful motions that leaned more toward humor than rhythm. That style carried into his political career, particularly during his 2015–2016 campaign, when rally crowds began noticing his now-familiar combination of light bouncing, pointing, and the double fist pump, often timed loosely to classic rock or pop songs.
Over time, these movements evolved into what supporters see as self-aware, tongue-in-cheek fun rather than an attempt at serious dancing. Songs like “YMCA” turned the routine into a recurring moment at rallies.

The president then returned to the weightlifting example that Melania reportedly finds especially troubling.
“She says, darling, please. The weightlifting is terrible,” Trump said. “And I have to say this. The dancing they really like. She said they don’t like it. They’re just being nice to you. I said, that’s not right. The place goes crazy. They’re screaming, dance, please.”
Trump went on to describe the scenario he often reenacts on stage, contrasting a biological female competitor with a transgender athlete.
“But the weightlifting, but no, the girl gets up,” he said. “And you see, I want to be more, but I have somebody watching. I want to be more effusive. I want to really, yeah.”
He continued the story, describing the emotional aftermath of the competition.
President Trump addressed House Republicans on Tuesday using the closed-door gathering to rally lawmakers around the administration’s agenda as Republicans look ahead to the 2026 midterm elections. Trump’s remarks focused on party unity, legislative priorities, and the importance of holding the GOP’s House majority, while also touching on issues such as the economy, taxes, health care costs, and ongoing foreign policy challenges.
The appearance was part pep talk and part strategy session, with Trump encouraging members to stay disciplined on messaging and to frame upcoming legislative fights as a clear contrast with Democrats. The speech came amid a narrow House majority and heightened political tensions, giving the retreat added significance as Republicans coordinate their next moves early in the new session.
