Kevin Costner has embraced every chance to honor America, a sentiment he shared during a recent interview. The renowned ‘Yellowstone’ actor took the opportunity to express what the Fourth of July means to him and why it holds a significant place in his heart.

“It is an opportunity to look back at the journey of America, and before America was America,” Kostner said to Fox News. “There is something to protect here. There is something to celebrate.” In his view, Costner believes that Americans will not be able to “protect anything by putting our ego first,” and said that everyone should make it a priority to do “what is good for the nation.”

“That is a public service. [It] should be about the public, to begin with. Not about someone’s next four years. It can’t be,” he said, alluding to the White House. “It has to be first and foremost about what’s broken here, and there’s always gonna be something to be done. How we fit in the world? What is our place?”

Costner continued, highlighting the maturity needed to prioritize national interest over personal gain. He said, “it requires a very evolved personality” to put one’s ego aside and commit to what is best for the country. Reflecting on leadership, he added that perhaps what the country needs is “a woman” at its helm.

“I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on ‘Horizon’ and doing all the things that’s required and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love — that I know you love,” Costner shared. “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future. It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning. I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”

It’s been over a year and a half since ‘Yellowstone’ last graced the screens, a surprising hiatus for such a popular series. The show’s intrigue hasn’t just been on-screen; off-screen, tensions mirrored the intense drama of the Dutton family saga. Central to the turmoil was the departure of Costner amid a flurry of disputes. Reports suggested Costner wanted reduced filming days, but series creator Taylor Sheridan wasn’t on board, resulting in Costner’s exit according to Variety.

Meanwhile, Costner moved on to a ‘Horizon,’ a four-part Western film series that he co-wrote, directed, and even partially funded himself. Despite a lukewarm reception at Cannes, the first installment of “Horizon” has premiered nationwide.
