Foreign Leader Makes Surprise Trip To Mar-A-Lago After Trump’s Tariff Threats

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a list minute trip to President-elect Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products if the border countries fail to halt illegal immigration into the United States across their respective borders.

On Monday, Trump announced that he will be imposing a 25 percent tariff on all good entering the United States unless the two countries took steps to stem the flow of record-setting illegal immigration to the United States.

“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Monday evening.

“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”

Trudeau told reporters in the Prince Edward Islands that he was confident the issue would be worked out after speaking with the president-elect over the phone. “We’re going to work together to meet some of the concerns,” he said. “But ultimately it is through lots of real constructive conversations with President Trump that I am going to have, that will keep us moving forward on the right track for all Canadians.”

On Friday, reports surfaced that Trudeau was headed to West Palm Beach, Florida for a trip that came together abruptly. Videos soon arrived showing the prime minister arriving at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate, while a source familiar with the matter confirmed that Trudeau met Trump for dinner in a statement to Fox News.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc accompanied Trudeau on the trip, which made the prime minister the first G7 leader to meet with Trump since his re-election earlier this month.

A photo from the dinner soon emerged on social media, which showed the two leaders sitting at a large round table alongside a number of important cabinet nominees.

Attendees included North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Trump’s “Energy Czar” and nominee for Secretary of the Interior, as well as Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Commerce. U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), Trump’s NSA nominee and Senator-elect Dave McCormick (R-PA) were also in attendance.

Trump has long stated that increasing America’s energy production is a top priority for his administration. Canada has long been a key partner in U.S. energy exports, something Trump hopes to expand upon by reauthorizing the Keystone XL pipeline project.

Trudeau’s visit comes just days after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told Trump that she will work to stop all illegal immigration into the United States in response to the tariff threats. The vast majority of Mexico’s export economy relies on trade with the U.S., while at least five percent of the nation’s GDP is based on remittance payments from U.S.-based workers.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he had secured key immigration concessions from Mexico’s president, who he said has agreed to ramp up the deployment of personnel and resources meant to deter illegal drug and migrant crossings into the U.S.

The policy change is aimed at “closing our Southern Border” and “stopping the massive drug flow into the United States,” according to Trump, who described his call with  Sheinbaum as “wonderful” and “productive.” Those sentiments were echoed by Sheinbaum in a post on X. “I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump. We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico,” she wrote after Trump’s announcement on Truth Social.
