Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Monday in Hollywood after police said he attacked and threatened a rideshare driver.

The 59-year-old film and TV star was taken into custody near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue after officers responded to a reported assault just after midnight, Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes said in an email Tuesday.

“The investigation determined that the suspect, later identified as Kiefer Sutherland, entered a rideshare vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats toward the victim,” Terzes said.

The driver did not suffer injuries requiring medical treatment at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing, Terzes added.

Sutherland was booked into the Los Angeles County jail shortly after 4 a.m. on an unspecified felony charge. Records show bail was set at $50,000, and he was released about seven hours later. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 2.

Sutherland’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.

NBC Los Angeles first reported the arrest.

The Canadian-born actor rose to fame in the 1980s as a brooding Hollywood heartthrob before reinventing himself as counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on Fox’s hit series 24 in the 2000s. He is the son of late Oscar-winning actor Donald Sutherland.
