Jill Biden Reveals What Led Joe Biden To End 2024 Election Bid In New Memoir
Former First Lady Jill Biden is opening up about one of the most dramatic moments of the 2024 election cycle: the decision by former President Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign.
In a new memoir scheduled for release this summer, she reflects on the personal and political turmoil surrounding the decision and the final chapter of her husband’s long political career.
The book, titled View from the East Wing, was announced Wednesday by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. According to the publisher, the memoir will chronicle Jill Biden’s experiences “before, during, and after” the “unexpected ending” of Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection bid.
The book is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2026. In a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press, Jill Biden described the project as a deeply personal reflection on her years as first lady and the historic events that unfolded during her husband’s presidency.
“It was kind of cathartic for me to write it, and I wrote about all the, you know, sometimes painful — but other times, most of it really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency,” she said.
While she declined to discuss specific passages from the book ahead of its release, the memoir arrives as renewed attention focuses on the circumstances that led Joe Biden to abandon his reelection effort in 2024. At the time, his campaign was struggling under mounting pressure following a widely criticized debate performance against then-candidate Donald Trump in June of that year.
The debate proved to be a pivotal moment in the race. Biden, who was 81 at the time, faced immediate scrutiny over his age and stamina after the event. Concerns that had simmered quietly among Democratic strategists and donors quickly intensified, with many party leaders beginning to question whether he could defeat Trump in the general election or withstand the intensity of the campaign.
In the weeks that followed, anxiety spread within Democratic circles that Biden’s candidacy could harm the party’s chances in November. Behind the scenes, senior party figures and major donors reportedly urged him to reconsider his campaign.

Ultimately, Biden announced that he would step aside, bringing an end to a political career that had spanned more than five decades.
At the time, the former president framed the decision as one made in the interest of the country rather than his own ambitions. In an August 2024 interview, Biden said stepping down was his “obligation,” arguing that preserving political stability and preventing Trump’s return to power outweighed his desire to remain in the race.
Although Biden maintained that he still believed he was capable of serving, he acknowledged that concerns raised by Democratic leaders had become difficult to ignore.
Jill Biden’s memoir appears set to revisit that tense period from the inside.
The memoir is expected to push back against criticism that the Biden family ignored warning signs about the president’s political viability for too long. Reporting following Biden’s withdrawal suggested that the decision was driven not by a single moment, but by a series of compounding factors.
Those included the damaging debate performance, growing alarm among Democratic officials, concerns about Biden’s health and political strength, and a final judgment that remaining in the race would jeopardize the party’s chances in the election.
