NEW: Trump Unveils Jaw-Dropping Proposal For Strait Of Hormuz: ‘Me And The Ayatollah!’
President Donald Trump on Monday floated the idea of joint control over the Strait of Hormuz and appeared uncertain about Iran’s current leadership while taking questions from reporters.
Speaking on the tarmac at Palm Beach International Airport before departing Florida following a weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump was asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins who currently controls the critical waterway.
The president suggested a resolution could be near if ongoing negotiations with Tehran pan out.
The Strait would be open “real soon,” he said, pointing to a deal he has repeatedly teased in recent days.
“It’ll be jointly controlled,” Trump said of the strategic passage.
Pressed on who would share that control, Trump quipped, “Maybe me, maybe me.”
“Me and the ayatollah, whoever the ayatollah is, whoever the next ayatollah [is.],” the president added, referencing uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership and alluding to reported injuries suffered by Mojtaba Khamenei.
Trump argued the situation in Tehran amounts to an inevitable political reset.
“There’s automatically a regime change,” the president added.
Iranian officials have named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the opening day of joint Israeli and U.S. strikes.
Despite some movement in the direction of peace on the American side, Iran slapped down talk of a ceasefire Monday, taunting Trump after he said the U.S. would pause strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure following what he described as “very good” peace talks.
An Iranian official told Fars News Agency, which is aligned with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, that there is “no direct or indirect contact with Trump.”
The unnamed source claimed Trump backed down after “hearing that our targets would include all power stations in West Asia.”
Iran’s rhetoric didn’t stop there. Iranian Major General Abdollahi warned: “The use of a new, secret weapon will begin soon and it will bring an end to the enemy’s operations.”
The comments landed minutes after Trump said the two sides had held “productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities.”
