‘Squad’ Dem Launches Push To Give Reparations To Illegal Aliens

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., is drawing fresh backlash after saying illegal immigrants should receive “reparations” for the “trauma” she claims was inflicted by the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Jayapal made the comments in a social media video posted Friday, tied to remarks she delivered on the House floor and during a hearing she hosted titled, “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Attack on Our Children.” During that hearing, Jayapal went further, suggesting a future Democratic administration should pursue criminal charges against officials involved in immigration enforcement.

“We need real accountability because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted,” Jayapal said at the hearing. “They need to be brought before us and they need to be held account for the trauma that they have created and we are going to have to have some form of reparation.”

Her comments come as Democrats continue to wage a full-court press against President Donald Trump’s border and interior enforcement agenda, particularly the administration’s expanded use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In recent weeks, Democratic lawmakers have demanded new limits on federal immigration operations after agents were involved in two fatal shootings during clashes with anti-ICE demonstrators in January. The unrest followed Trump’s decision to deploy additional personnel to Minnesota after reports surfaced about welfare fraud involving Somali migrants.

On Capitol Hill, Senate Democrats have used the filibuster to block legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security, a standoff that has helped prolong the partial shutdown and fueled disruptions across the agency. Democrats have pushed for new restrictions on ICE, including demands that agents stop wearing masks and obtain judicial warrants before entering private property to arrest suspected illegal immigrants.

Jayapal, a leading progressive voice, serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement, according to the House website. She also chaired the Congressional Progressive Caucus from 2019 to 2025.

Trump, meanwhile, has framed the crackdown as a public-safety and sovereignty issue, arguing illegal immigration surged to record levels under former President Joe Biden. On his first day back in office, Trump signed executive orders designating Mexican drug cartels, the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and MS-13 as foreign terrorist organizations, part of a broader push to treat transnational criminal groups as national security threats.

Jayapal’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
