Trump Confirms Major Development In Negotiations With Top Iranian Official
President Donald Trump confirmed for the first time Monday that the U.S. is actively engaging Iran’s top parliamentary leader in talks, a shift that comes after days of murky backchannel chatter.
“We’re gonna find out,” Trump told The New York Post when asked about Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. “I’ll let you know that in about a week.”
The remark amounts to the clearest acknowledgment yet that Washington is dealing directly with Tehran’s power structure. Until now, reports of outreach to Ghalibaf had been publicly disputed by Iranian officials, who previously dismissed talk of negotiations as “fake news.”
Trump suggested the outreach is part of a broader shake-up inside Iran, claiming the old guard has been wiped out and replaced with figures more open to working with the U.S.
“There has been total regime change because the regimes of the past are gone and we’re dealing with a whole new set of people,” Trump said. “And thus far, they’ve been much more reasonable.”
Pressed on whether these figures differ from past adversaries, Trump didn’t hedge.
“Pretty much,” he said. “The other people are all dead.”

But any talk of diplomacy is unfolding alongside a rapid escalation on the battlefield.
Iran launched a fresh wave of strikes on regional infrastructure, hitting a water and electrical plant in Kuwait and setting off a fire at a major oil refinery in Haifa, Israel. The attack marked a direct hit on critical energy targets as the monthlong war intensifies.
Trump made clear a U.S. response is imminent.
“You’ll see shortly,” he told The Post when asked how Washington would react.
At the same time, the president is moving additional U.S. military assets into the region, warning Iran to cut a deal before it faces devastating consequences.

The uncertainty now centers on Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen publicly since U.S. and Israeli strikes began Feb. 28.
“Nobody’s heard from him,” Trump said. “He’s very seriously injured.”
Asked whether Khamenei is still alive, Trump added: “We don’t know. We think probably yes, but in extraordinarily bad shape.”
The comments came just hours after Iran’s latest strike on Israeli energy infrastructure — underscoring how talks and threats are now unfolding side by side.
