Key Ally Betrays America, Closes Airspace To US Planes Involved In Iran Conflict
Spain slammed the door on U.S. warplanes Monday, escalating a brewing clash with Donald Trump by blocking American aircraft tied to the Iran conflict from its airspace.
The move marks a sharp break between Washington and Madrid, with Spain now refusing not just base access but even overflight rights for U.S. military operations.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed the decision, saying the restriction had been clear from the start.
“This was made perfectly clear to the American military and forces from the very beginning,” Robles said. “Neither the bases are authorized, nor, of course, is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any actions related to the war in Iran.”
Spain had already barred U.S. forces from using key southern bases, including Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base, long considered critical hubs for American operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Expanding that ban to airspace now squeezes another major route for U.S. logistics.

The standoff has turned into a direct political fight between Trump and Spain’s left-wing government led by Pedro Sánchez, one of the most outspoken critics in Europe of U.S. and Israeli military action.
Sánchez has blasted the Iran war as “illegal,” “reckless” and “unjust,” framing Spain’s refusal as a matter of sovereignty and international law.

“This decision is part of the decision already made by the Spanish government not to participate in or contribute to a war which was initiated unilaterally and against international law,” Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said in a radio interview when asked whether the move could further strain ties with the United States.
Trump has already fired back at Madrid over its earlier refusal to allow base access, warning, “We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain” and “We don’t want anything to do with Spain.”

A White House official brushed off the latest escalation, insisting the U.S. military isn’t slowing down.
“The United States Military is meeting or surpassing all of its goals under Operation Epic Fury and does not need help from Spain or anyone else,” the official told Fox News Digital.
The U.S. still maintains a sizable footprint in Spain under longstanding agreements, with Rota and Morón serving as key transit points for forces moving between the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Rota, in particular, hosts U.S. Navy warships assigned to the Sixth Fleet, some of which are already operating in the wider Iran conflict.
Spain’s earlier restrictions have already forced American aircraft, including refueling tankers, to shift operations to other European bases in Germany and France — a workaround that could now become even more critical as Madrid tightens the screws.
