Incoming House Dem Endorses Amnesty For All Illegals, Says 9/11 Was America’s Fault
Melat Kiros, the latest socialist candidate to unseat a longtime Democrat incumbent with an insurgent primary campaign, is under the microscope for repeatedly stating that the 9/11 attacks were a result of America’s foreign policy, calling for amnesty for 20 million non-citizens and a number of additional far-left policy stances.
Kiros, a native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she immigrated to the United States as an infant. Her father had been selected in the U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery, and the family settled in the Denver area, specifically Aurora, Colorado.
Prior to entering politics, Kiros worked as an attorney in the New York office of the law firm Sidley Austin. She also worked as a barista while managing student loans.
In 2023, she published a Medium article defending pro-Palestinian student activists and criticizing law firms’ responses to such activism following the October 7, 2023, attacks. She lost her position at Sidley Austin shortly afterward.
Kiros has received endorsements from several far-left organizations, including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Justice Democrats, the Sunrise Movement, the Working Families Party, and CAIR Action. She is a member of the DSA and describes herself as a democratic socialist.
Her policy platform includes several proposals that have drawn attention for their scope. She supports abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has called for releasing individuals in ICE detention who have no criminal record. On immigration more broadly, she has advocated for an “immediate pathway to citizenship for every single” illegal alien and asylum seeker residing in the United States.
In a June 2026 interview, when asked whether the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were the inevitable consequence of American foreign policy, Kiros indicated that they were. “Inevitable in the sense that we destabilized a lot of the Middle East that forced people to believe that another act of violence was the only response,” she said.
Kiros has also expressed support for the abolition of private health insurance, an even more expansive green new deal, a moratorium on new data centers, federal rent stabilization and social housing, raising the federal minimum wage, and ending U.S. military aid to Israel, including a full arms embargo.
Democrat Socialist Melat Kiros says she wants to get rid of private health insurance:

After unseating longtime incumbent Diana DeGette in the primary, Kiros enters the general election as the heavy favorite. Colorado’s 1st District, which includes Denver, is a deep-blue seat with a strong Democratic partisan lean.
his positioning essentially makes Kiros a lock to be elected to the U.S. House in November.
