Democrat Senator Under Fire for “Heart” Abortion Pin at Biden’s SOTU Address

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) sparked criticism online last night during the State of the Union.

He wore an “abortion” pin featuring a heart within the letter “o” to the address Tuesday in Washington. The Democratic Party has shifted its stance on abortion, moving from the previously popular stance of “safe, legal, and rare” to advocating for taxpayer-funded abortion without restrictions.

He wrote: “I’m wearing my abortion pin from [Planned Parenthood Federation of America] to tonight’s State of the Union address,” Markey captioned two photos. “Abortion is essential healthcare and we need to codify this right.”

Biden spoke about abortion in his State of the Union Address last night too. According the New York Times transcript, Biden said:

Congress must restore the right…Congress must restore the right that was taken away in Roe v. Wade and protect Roe v. Wade. Give every woman right.

The vice president and I are doing everything to protect access to reproductive health care and safeguard patient safety. But already, more than a dozen states are enforcing extreme abortion bans,” he added. “Make no mistake about it: If Congress passes a national ban, I will veto it.

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) held anti-abortion views when he was first elected to Congress, and supported a constitutional amendment to ban it. He justified his stance by citing conscience. However, he changed his stance, starting with his vote against measures that prohibited funding for federal employees’ abortions unless their life was in danger in 1983.

During his Senate campaign in 1984, Markey stated that he still opposed abortion personally, but believed it should remain legal. Since then, he has opposed any restrictions on abortion. Markey wore an “ABORTION” pin with a heart replacing the “o” to the 2023 State of the Union Address.
