WATCH: Ex-Obama Campaigner Shreds Letitia James’ Fraud Case Against Trump

Don Peebles, a Florida real estate titan and top bundler to former President Barack Obama during his 2008 and 2012 campaigns, is speaking out against New York Attorney General Letitia James’ prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

Appearing on Fox News, Peebles declared the Trump empire’s real estate transactions a “victimless crime” and said James’ suit “should never have been brought,” a damning indictment against one of the country’s top Democratic prosecutors.

“Had it not been [Trump], it wouldn’t have been brought because there’s never been a case like this before,” Peebles told host Neil Cavuto. “I think that is an example of why Trump continues to rise in the polls. They are making him into a martyr.”

Peebles, who is Black, took a keen interest in President Obama’s historic 2008 candidacy, joining his campaign’s national finance committee and holding a major fundraiser in Miami Beach for him in May 2008 as the then-senator was still battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. He was previously on the national finance committee for former President Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign.

In addition, Peebles has underwritten a number of progressive causes over the years, including the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and financing efforts to create more friendly environments for minority- and women-owned businesses.

Cavuto challenged Peebles for what President Trump may offer as collateral after claiming he is unable to pay the $454.2 million judgment against him. James has already filed legal motions to begin seizing Trump buildings, golf courses, and other properties as soon as Monday.

“This case amplifies that it’s very difficult to do business in New York, and if you happen to be a wealthy, successful entrepreneur, watch out because the government can be used to weaponize [against] you, especially if you get out of line and do something that the far-left doesn’t like,” he said.

“They will not hesitate to disrupt your business, or worse, put you in jail.”

Attorneys for Trump are asking to delay the payment while it is considered by an appeals court. They have claimed the former president has approached more than 30 companies about a bond to cover the judgment but has so far been unsuccessful. James has countered, saying the Republican’s team has offered no “documentary evidence” for why companies are refusing to meet a bond and said Trump should be able to collect the amount through smaller bonds with several companies, according to Fortune.

President Trump has used the case as another example of the justice system being weaponized against him in an election year. Already, the Republican frontrunner has faced attempts in 35 states to keep him off the 2024 ballot, all of which were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court last month. He suffered an $84 million civil judgment against him in the E. Jean Carroll case and continues to contend with four ongoing criminal trials. Republicans have largely stuck by their nominee, echoing his declarations that allies of President Joe Biden are using all means except the ballot box to disrupt his candidacy.
