Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Nukes Reporters In Epic Defense Of Harrison Butker
On Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid alongside star quarterback Patrick Mahomes came out swinging in defense of kicker Harrison Butker, who has faced a barrage of criticism for his recent commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas. The speech which promoted traditional values, lit a firestorm drawing backlash from liberal groups.
At a press conference earlier today, Reid and Mahomes did not shy away from addressing the controversy head-on. Mahomes, who has played alongside Butker for seven years, emphasized the kicker’s character over his public statements. “I’ve known Harrison for seven years and I judge him by the character that he shows every single day—that’s a good person,” said Mahomes.
“That’s someone who cares about the people around him, cares about his family, and wants to make a good impact in society.” Mahomes acknowledged differing views within the team, adding, “There are certain things that he said that I don’t necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is.”
Mahomes further highlighted the unique environment of the NFL locker room, where diverse opinions can coexist and enrich the team dynamic. “What makes the locker room so cool is you’re able to have those discussions and become better and make those decisions for yourself.”

Andy Reid, with his typical calm and authoritative demeanor, echoed Mahomes’ sentiments and stressed the importance of respecting individual opinions—a cornerstone of American values. “Everybody’s got their own opinion. That’s what’s so great about this country. You can share those things and you work through it. That’s what guys do,” Reid explained.
“I didn’t think we needed to [talk about Butker’s comments]. We’re a microcosm of life here. Everybody’s from different areas, different religions, different races, and so we all get along. We all respect each other’s opinions.” Butker, known for his sharp accuracy on the field, took a bold stance off the field, advocating for women to embrace roles as mothers and homemakers, a view that aligned with his Catholic beliefs.
The stance led to a clash with modern progressive ideologies, sparking a debate that has transcended the sports world and ventured into societal values. Despite the backlash, Butker’s jersey sales have surged, signaling a significant base of support. According to NFL.com, Butker’s jerseys are flying off the shelves, making him one of the most popular players in terms of merchandise sales, trailing only behind teammate Travis Kelce.
“Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally,” Butker said during the speech. “He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people, it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.”
