REPORT: Democrats Are In Panic Mode Internally, Fear Race Is ‘Slipping Away’ From Kamala
The longer Vice President Kamala Harris spins her wheels in the polls, the louder her allies are becoming in voicing their concern that her chances of victory are dwindling.
The Hill reports that Harris aides, allies, and insiders are growing increasingly comfortable with declaring that the Democrat’s campaign has gone badly off-track in the final weeks leading up to the election. Those close to the veep cite tight battleground polls in places like Nevada and Michigan, states which should be reliably blue for a progressive female candidate of color and are now anything but. Even slim leads in the polls can’t be trusted, some say, pointing to margins of error that essentially indicate many of the seven swing states in play could tip either way.

Cracks in the formidable “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are starting to show, and not just for Harris’s campaign. Cook Political Report this week shifted both U.S. Senate races from “Lean Democrat” to “Tossup,” a sign that former President Donald Trump’s coattails are finally stretching far enough to help some of the down-ballot Senate candidates who have trailed him in most every contested state. In Michigan, home to the nation’s largest concentration of Arab-Americans, deep dissatisfaction with Biden-Harris’s support for Israel has led to a boycott of the election, forcing Harris to spend additional time campaigning in Detroit with superstar artists like Lizzo and Eminem.
Add it all up, insiders say, and this will come down to a nail-biter of a race. “Everyone keeps saying, ‘It’s close.’ Yes, it’s close, but are things trending our way? No. And no one wants to openly admit that,” one Democratic strategist said. “Could we still win? Maybe. Should anyone be even slightly optimistic right now? No.” Another added that the vibe shifts this year are giving Democrats a bad trip. “If this is a vibe election, the current vibes ain’t great,” they told The Hill.
Earlier this week reports emerged that Harris’s inner circle is gaming out a scenario where she loses Wisconsin and Michigan, which have been trending toward Trump, but notches a critical win in Pennsylvania. Even that scenario would leave her two Electoral College votes shy of the necessary 270 to win. To make up ground, she would be forced to win in North Carolina or Nevada, neither of which is assured. The latter state, which hasn’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate in 20 years, is now seeing a surge in Republican early voting that portends a good election night for President Trump.
Jim Manley, who served as a longtime senior aide to the departed former Senator Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), said it’s frustrating to see President Trump use “unhinged rhetoric” on the stump while keeping the race close in a state that elected the powerhouse Democratic senator for 30 years. “It’s pretty damn frustrating for it to be so close given how extreme and unhinged Trump’s rhetoric has become in the last couple of weeks,” Manley said. “I just hope and trust they’ve got a plan,” he said of the Harris campaign.
