Bizarre New Details Emerge From Attack On Vance’s Home After Suspect’s Arraignment
The man accused of smashing windows at Vice President JD Vance’s Cincinnati home made his first court appearance Tuesday, facing a stack of state and federal charges after an overnight hammer attack.
William DeFoor, 26, appeared in court for the first time on state counts of vandalism, criminal damaging and trespassing tied to the early Monday incident at Vance’s East Walnut Hills residence.
His defense attorney told the court he and the Secret Service spent “hours,” after DeFoor’s arrest discussing what happened, insisting it had nothing to do with political beliefs and was a mental health issue. However, DeFoor has recently gone by “Julia” on social media accounts, leading many to believe the incident is the latest example of transgender violence against Republicans.
A judge set DeFoor’s bond at $11,000.
Prosecutors say DeFoor used a hammer to smash windows at Vance’s home in the early morning hours and also tried to break the window of a federal agent’s vehicle parked nearby. Vance and his family were not home at the time.

Authorities allege DeFoor refused commands to drop the hammer and attempted to flee before being taken into custody. Prosecutors say the damage totaled about $28,000.
Beyond the state charges, DeFoor is also facing more serious federal counts, including damaging government property and assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers. If convicted, those charges could carry decades in prison.
A motive has not been publicly released, but court records show DeFoor has a prior history with law enforcement, WLWT reports.
In 2023, a trespassing case against him was dropped after he was found not competent to stand trial. About a year later, he was ordered to receive treatment after police said he vandalized a business in Hyde Park, the affluent Cincinnati neighborhood where DeFoor grew up.
DeFoor is scheduled for a 9 a.m. arraignment on Tuesday. A court date for the federal charges has not yet been set.
