Fetterman Lays Out Scenario In Which He Would Leave Party

During a recent appearance on CNN, Senator Johnson Fetterman (D-PA) once again indicated that he is open to leaving the Democratic Party.

The discussion has largely centered on Fetterman’s positions on Israel, his willingness to work with Republicans on certain legislation, and public polling in his home state. Fetterman has repeatedly stated that he has no plans to leave the Democratic Party or switch to the Republican Party, though he was left the door open.

While speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Fetterman laid a scenario in which he might consider leaving the Democratic Party. “If I change my party spontaneously right now, my views and my votes aren’t going to change. It’s really more of a statement,” he said.

The senator continued by posing a question about the direction of the Democratic Party on Israel. “If you believe the Democratic Party’s future is describing Israel of apartheid, genocidal, not deserving our support…does this make sense for me as a Democrat?”

Fetterman then addressed the implications for his affiliation.

“If that becomes the Democratic platform that we will not ever vote for any aid and will turn our back on Israel, then that makes me to make that decision is really what a Democrat should stand for, or being a part of my party for me,” he said.

Speculation about Fetterman potentially changing parties has circulated for months. Factors include his consistent advocacy for robust U.S. support for Israel, his willingness to work across the aisle with Republicans on select matters, and criticism of certain progressive positions within the Democratic Party on issues such as crime and immigration.

Public polling has reflected divided opinions in Pennsylvania. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed that 52 percent of Pennsylvania voters would like to see Fetterman leave the Democratic Party.
