Jack Smith Turns Into Frozen Statue After Realizing He May Have Perjured Himself During Senate Hearing

Sen. Eric Schmitt pressed Jack Smith on Tuesday over whether a basketball outing put him in Atlanta near another prosecutor pursuing President Trump, an accusation Smith denied as Democrats challenged the Missouri Republican’s evidence.

The confrontation centered on text messages Schmitt suggested could point to contact between the former special counsel and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Smith said he did not meet Willis and rejected the suggestion that he had attended an Atlanta Hawks game.

Schmitt’s questioning escalated into a bitter exchange, with the Republican calling Smith a “villain” and “dirtbag” before Democrats demanded another look at the messages.

The texts displayed at the hearing showed a prosecutor on Smith’s team booking a meeting room before another staffer said Smith was “already down here.” The messages shown did not name a basketball team or mention a game.

Schmitt nevertheless challenged Smith over his recollection, telling him, “I don’t think you know that we have this stuff.”

The senator asked whether Smith had traveled to Atlanta in February 2024, tying the alleged visit to Willis’ disclosure of a relationship with a prosecutor working on her election interference case against Trump.

“Let me just give you a little context. The day before Fannie Willis came clean with her affair with the prosecutor, you know, the Atlanta prosecutor that was also trying to get Trump. The next day, were you in Atlanta?” Schmitt asked.

Smith disputed the premise.

“I really don’t think so. It’s possible I flew through the Atlanta airport on the way to Florida, but I do not have a recollection of going to Atlanta. I definitely did not go to a Hawks game,” Smith said.

Smith offered a different account of a basketball outing, saying he had attended an Iowa Hawkeyes game in Maryland to see Caitlin Clark play. Democrats seized on that explanation, suggesting Schmitt had mixed up the college team with Atlanta’s NBA franchise.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., raised that possibility when her turn to question Smith came next.

“Could it then be that University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes? … That might be the confusion over the names of the team,” she said.

Schmitt accused Klobuchar of trying to “rehabilitate the witness.”

The dispute also drew protests over Smith’s opportunity to examine the material behind the accusation. Schmitt’s staff briefly displayed the messages, and the senator initially resisted showing them again as Democrats argued Smith should be allowed to see what he was being asked about. Schmitt eventually relented.

Klobuchar later cited an Iowa-Maryland matchup as support for Smith’s account.

“We have confirmed that, in fact, you are right, Mr. Smith. Iowa, the Iowa Hawkeyes, played Maryland on Feb. 3, 2024. The final score was 93 to 85. Iowa won, and Caitlin Clark scored over 30 points, so it must have been a pretty good game. The game was, in fact, in Maryland, Mr. Smith,” she said.

The game’s date and location were central to the Democrats’ rebuttal, though those details alone would not establish Smith’s attendance.

Klobuchar also demanded an apology over Schmitt’s accusation and name-calling.

“And I would just say, for a U.S. senator to have false information and imply, based on a confusion about the name of a team, which I knew, knowing my Midwestern sports, and imply that you were in another city that you were somehow involved that day in what was happening in Georgia and then call you a dirtbag is something that deserves an apology.”

Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, likewise dismissed Schmitt’s line of questioning, saying the panel had been “witness to a narrative, a false narrative of accusing [Smith] of being at a game that you were nowhere near, and I suppose that was supposed to be in furtherance of some sort of conspiracy.”
