JUST IN: John Durham To Testify This Week On Capitol Hill; Here’s What We Know
Capitol Hill will be holding its collective breath this week ahead of testimony by special counsel John Durham roughly a month after the release of his report which concluded that federal authorities were too rushed in their desire to draw a connection between Russia and the 2016 campaign for former President Donald Trump.
Durham will testify Tuesday at a closed-door meeting of the House Intelligence Committee as well as a public hearing with the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday at 9 am. Both committees are overseen by Republicans in charge of Congress who have asked him to detail the results of his four-year investigation into false allegations of Trump-Russia collusion. In May, Durham released a 306-page report concluding the FBI moved ahead with its investigation despite having no evidence of a connection.
“FBI records prepared by [Peter] Strzok in February and March 2017 show that at the time of the opening of Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI had no information in its holdings indicating that at any time during the campaign anyone in the Trump had been in contact with any Russian intelligence officials.”
As part of his investigation, Durham also uncovered that the Obama administration sought a warrant to surveil a foreign policy advisor to Trump and that no support could be found for charges made in the infamous Steele dossier alleging wrongdoing by Trump. Former British intelligence official Christopher Steele was offered $1 million by the FBI to corroborate the allegations made in the document but was unable to do so. Durham also reported that former vendors for the Hillary Clinton campaign refused to hand over documents he requested as part of his investigation.
President Trump has also regularly decried previous efforts by the Clinton campaign to label criticism of President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden as the product of “Russian disinformation.” Biden Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently denied being behind the effort to gather dozens of former intelligence officials in a coordinated effort to discredit the infamous Hunter Biden laptop.
The groundbreaking report by Durham vindicated many of the claims made by President Trump that he suffers from an ongoing “witch hunt” which began in 2016 and continues to the present day. This week’s testimony will offer House Republicans more ammunition in their quest to impeach FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, and defund the Bureau.
